Hollow extrusion dies are specialized tools used to manufacture profiles featuring one or more internal voids or cavities, such as tubes, pipes, and complex structural frames. Unlike solid dies, they incorporate a suspended mandrel that shapes the internal geometry of the extruded material.
Key Components
A typical hollow die assembly requires additional machining and components compared to a solid die. It primarily consists of three parts:
Mandrel (Core): Suspended inside the die, this part creates the internal hollow section(s). It contains port holes that allow the material to divide and flow around the core.
Die Cap / Plate: The outer section that shapes the exterior contour of the profile and holds the mandrel securely in place.
Backer / Bolster: Provides structural support to reinforce the die stack and manage the intense heat and pressure during the continuous extrusion process.
